Selection bias is the bias introduced by the selection of individuals, groups, or data for analysis in such a way that proper randomization is not achieved, thereby failing to ensure that the sample obtained is representative of the population intended to be analyzed.[1] It is sometimes referred to as the selection effect. The phrase "selection bias" most often refers to the distortion of a statistical analysis, resulting from the method of collecting samples. If the selection bias is not taken into account, then some conclusions of the study may be false. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selection_bias

A review of Matthew Crawford's Shop Class as Soulcraft: An Inquiry Into the Value of Work ISBN:1594202230 - Robert Pirsig, Zen And The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance, Richard Sennett, The Craft, SmallWorld, etc. Crawford's book arrives just as a vague sense of dissatisfaction with the demands and rewards of the modern economy (New Economy) is coalescing into something like a Movement. Zvi Mowshowitz: Gemini 2.5 is the New SoTA. Google Gemini 2.5 Pro Experimental is America’s next top large language model. That doesn’t mean it is the best model for everything. In particular, it’s still Gemini, so it still is a proud member of the Fun Police, in terms of censorship and also just not being friendly or engaging, or willing to take a stand. (more)

Zvi Mowshowitz: AI #96: o3 But Not Yet For Thee. The year in models certainly finished off with a bang. In this penultimate week, we get OpenAI o3, which purports to give us vastly more efficient performance than o1, and also to allow us to choose to spend vastly more compute if we want a superior answer. We also got DeepSeek v3, which claims to have trained a roughly Claude Sonnet-strength model for only $6 million and 37b active parameters per token (671b total via mixture of experts). (more)

Zvi Mowshowitz: Time to Welcome Claude 3.7. Anthropic has reemerged from stealth and offers us Claude 3.7. Given this is named Claude 3.7, an excellent choice, from now on this blog will refer to what they officially call Claude Sonnet 3.5 (new) as Sonnet 3.6. (more)

Claude is a family of large language models developed by Anthropic.[1][2] The first model was released in March 2023. The Claude 3 family, released in March 2024, consists of three models: Claude Haiku optimized for speed, Claude Sonnet balancing capabilities and performance, and Claude Opus designed for complex reasoning tasks. These models can process both text and images, with Claude 3 Opus demonstrating enhanced capabilities in areas like mathematics, programming, and logical reasoning compared to previous versions... Claude 3.7 Sonnet was released on February 24, 2025. It is a pioneering hybrid AI reasoning model that allows users to choose between rapid responses and more thoughtful, step-by-step reasoning. This model integrates both capabilities into a single framework, eliminating the need for multiple models. Users can control how long the model "thinks" about a question, balancing speed and accuracy based on their needs. Anthropic also launched a research preview of Claude Code, an agentic command line tool that enables developers to delegate coding tasks directly from their terminal. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claude_(language_model)

chat-oriented programming (e.g. use of LLM chatbot) - same as vibe coding?

Steve Yegge: Revenge of the junior developer. Brief note about the meaning of "vibe coding": In this post, I assume that vibe coding will grow up and people will use it for real engineering, with the "turn your brain off" version of it sticking around just for prototyping and fun projects. (more)

Steve Yegge: The Death of the Stubborn Developer. I wrote a blog post back in May called The Death of the Junior Developer. It made people mad. My thesis has since been corroborated by a bunch of big companies, and it is also happening in other industries, not just software. It is a real, actual problem, despite being quite inconvenient for almost everyone involved. 2024-06-24-YeggeTheDeathOfTheJuniorDeveloper (more)

Steve Yegge: The Death of the Junior Developer. Warning: This blog post is somewhat speculative; the sky might not be falling. A lot of people picked a bad year to be a junior developer. A whole lot of people. I wouldn't want to be just getting started in the industry today. Not just the computer industry. Any industry. It's a bad year to be a junior anything. (more)
